Anthony Davis Recalls Awesome Story Of LeBron James Gifting Him No. 23 At Dinner

LeBron James gave Anthony Davis the No. 23 jersey for next season and Davis shared his thoughts no the situation Tuesday night on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (3:18):

“The first time we had dinner since the trade happened, he was like, “Man look, here’s 23.’ I was like, ‘Oh wow, thanks LeBron,'” Davis said.

Unfortunately, Nike wouldn’t allow the number change due to the “production issues and the massive financial hit” the company would take considering the number of jerseys had already been produced.

So, Davis will have to switch off the No. 23 for the first time in his professional career.

The All-Star explained that he chose No. 3 after looking through numbers on the NBA 2K video game.

“Honestly,” Davis said, “I just chose No. 3 — I went on ‘2K,’ the video game .. so I’m literally in my living room, on the video game, going to myself, ‘Edit Player,’ and I’m going through all the numbers.”

Also, he had that number back when he was in elementary school.

“It was my elementary school number — first number I ever played basketball in,” he said. “I saw No. 3, and I was like, this takes me back to elementary school where it all started.”

The Lakers officially announced Davis’ new number by sharing a post via the team’s Twitter account of the No. 3 uniform being made.

However, Davis couldn’t deny being a little upset that he won’t be able to make his Lakers debut in No. 23.

“We went to dinner, the first time we went to dinner since the trade happened, and (LeBron) was, like, ‘Man, look, here’s 23,'” Davis recalled. “I was like, ‘Oh, wow, thank you, LeBron.’… (But Nike said) ‘we don’t care who you guys are; that’s too much money.’ So I was a little hurt.”
