Report: Patriots Have One Of NFL’s Best, Deepest Wide Receivers

Many analysts said that the New England Patriots have a shallow wide receiver depth last week. Some of them said the Patriots need more wide receivers. Well, this unit is pretty packed now, and the Patriots have one of the deepest squad in the NFL.

“The Patriots also were left with just Ben Watson (suspended for the first four games of the regular season), Lance Kendricks, Eric Saubert and Ryan Izzo at tight end with Stephen Anderson and Matt LaCosse out with injuries.

“There’s little certainty for the Patriots at wide receiver and tight end right now. Players like Meyers, Berrios, Harris, Harry, LaCosse and Izzo have shown promise, but there are little guarantees. And the longer those players are out with injuries, the less time they’ll have learning the playbook and getting chemistry with quarterback Tom Brady.”

Last week, Jakobi Meyers was the clear No. 1 option right in front of Gunner Olszewski, Braxton Berrios, Dontrelle Inman, Ryan Davis and Damoun Patterson.

Everything got better on Friday. Julian Edelman is off of the NFI list, and Josh Gordon was conditionally reinstated. Demaryius Thomas was activated off of the PUP list and we had Phillip Dorset, N’Keal Harry and Maurice Harris back for practice. It was more than obvious that Edelman would come back, but we didn’t expect to see Gordon and Thomas join the Patriots. Gordon’s future with the team was hanging in the air, and nobody said a thing before it was an official decision.

This wide receiver depth should give the Patriots enough confidence to win this year’s Super Bowl.

There’s a five-man wide receiver depth chart for every team in the league. It’s made in accordance with the players’ approximate value score from the last season and the projected approximate value for rookies. The projections are formulated through the average rookie season of every drafted wide receiver of the last 10 years. There’s also a projection of the undrafted wide receivers.

First round: 5

Second round: 4

Third round: 2.5

Fourth round: 1.9

Fifth round: 1.8

Sixth round: .7

Seventh round: .5

Undrafted: .7

The average of each team’s top three receivers and the top five receivers was taken into consideration. The Pats are tied for having the fifth strongest starting group and the fourth-best overall body. Dorsett is one of the three best No. 5 wide receivers in the league.
