Report: DeMarcus Cousins Arrest Warrant Issued Over Threatening Phone Call

Los Angeles Lakers center DeMarcus Cousins may face jail time or a different sentence after threatening his girlfriend Christy West. There’s an arrest warrant issued for Cousins on a misdemeanor domestic violence charge.

Christy is mom of his 7-year-old son. She filed a police report Friday, about two hours after Cousins allegedly threatened to “put a bullet” in her head. Christy recorded the conversation, and delivered a copy to the Mobile (Alabama) police department.

Mobile police spokesperson Charlette M. Solis said “an arrest warrant has been issued.” The third-degree harassing communications charge was listed on the Mobile municipal court website.

“Yes, a warrant has been signed,” Cousins’ ex-girlfriend told USA TODAY Sports in a text message Thursday.

Defense attorney Mary Kristen Galanos isn’t involved in the case, but said that a suspect is subject to arrest in Alabama.

“They aren’t going (to) send a SWAT team out for him,” said Galanos of Shane A. Taylor & Associates. “What usually happens is that the person is picked up on a routine traffic stop.”

Galanos explained that the investigation has garnered so much interest these days, and Cousins’ attorney is expected to set up time for Cousins to turn himself in to police. He would be processed and released. Cousins’ charge is a Class A misdemeanor, and he may face a maximum of a year in jail.

According to Galanos, Cousins won’t serve much if any jail time if found guilty or if he decides to take a plea in the case.

NBA spokesman Mike Bass said in a statement Tuesday that the league is “investigating the allegations.”

“We are aware of the allegation involving DeMarcus Cousins and, of course, take this claim seriously,” the Lakers said in a their statement Tuesday. “We are in the process of gathering information and will reserve further comment at this time.”

The 29-year-old missed most of the 2018-19 season as he was recovering from the Achilles injury he suffered in January 2018. Cousins suffered a terrible quadriceps injury during the Golden State Warriors’ playoff run. He’s now a member of the Los Angeles Lakers family.
