Durant Isn’t The Player The Warriors Will Miss The Most, Steve Kerr Says

Kevin Durant is no longer part of the Golden State Warriors, and it looks like he won’t be missed on the field. Durant said the Warriors’ motion offense as limited, and some people from the Golden State weren’t really happy about the comments. According to Steve Kerr, Durant isn’t the player his team will miss the most this season.

“Klay being out is really the big change,” Kerr told The Athletic. “Losing Kevin, Andre (Iguodala), Shaun (Livingston), obviously, those are huge losses. Losing Klay on top of all that really changes the way we’re going to have to play at both ends.

“Klay was always an integral part of everything. Movement on offense, but also the guarding of the ball handler on defense, switching onto bigs. So until he gets back, we’ve got to re-imagine everything and adapt accordingly.”

Thompson suffered an ACL tear in Game 6 of the NBA Finals. He won’t join the team until February.

According to a recent Wall Street Journal Magazine report, Durant said the Warriors’ offensive system can’t go any farther than this.

“The motion offense we run in Golden State, it only works to a certain point,” he said. “We can totally rely on our system for maybe the first two rounds. Then the next two rounds we’re going to have to mix in individual play. We’ve got to throw teams off, because they’re smarter in that round of playoffs.

“So now I have to dive into my bag, deep, to create stuff on my own, off the dribble, isos, pick-and-rolls, more so than let the offense create points for me.”

Durant saved the team in several postseason games. But, the 2014-15 team played perfectly without his help.

Thompson is out at the moment, and the team added D’Angelo Russell. The Warriors will have a completely different offense.

“Lot of new beginnings, new arena, new roster, and probably some new things, style of play, strategy,” Kerr said. “We’ll figure that out as we go. You always have to see how it looks on the court before you can really establish your identity. I’m excited about the challenge and it’s amazing it’s only a couple weeks away.”
