Former NBA MVP And A Warrior Expected To Join Team USA For 2020 Olympics

Team USA finished in seventh place in the 2019 FIBA World Cup after the 87-74 win over Poland. This wasn’t their best win, and most fans expected more from a team comprised by NBA players. This is about to change, and Team USA is getting reinforcement for the 2020 Olympics.

Mark Stein of the New York Times reported that Golden State Warriors and two-time MVP Stephen Curry will volunteer his skills for Team USA for the 2020 Olympics.

“Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors told CNBC earlier this week that he intended to make himself available for the 2020 Olympics in Japan. Stephen Curry, Green’s Golden State teammate, is also expected to volunteer his services, since Curry has yet to play in an Olympics.”

Curry has never been part of the Olympics. His only tournament play happened in the 2014 FIBA World Cup. The Warrior is 31, and this may actually be his last chance to play for Team USA.

Draymond Green isn’t going anywhere, and he plans to play in the 2020 Olympics. He was part of the team in 2016. In his appearance on CNBC’s “Power Money,” Green talked about his intentions.

“I do hope to play,” Green said, “and I think a lot of the guys will want to play. The (FIBA World Cup) schedule this year was a little treacherous with the (NBA) games that were in America, and also to travel to Australia. Which is why I think a lot of guys dropped out.

“It was a long ways to Chin, and it leads right into the season. Those guys will be coming back in a couple days. We’ll be two weeks before training camp.

“I think you’ll see a lot of guys participate next year in the Olympics, and I hope to be one of those 12 guys.”

Team USA Basketball director Jerry Colangelo says many players are interested in volunteering for the Olympics. Hopefully, players won’t drop out weeks before the official start.

“We’ve had a lot of indications about guys who want to play next summer,” said Colangelo. “But we had a lot of indications that many wanted to play this summer.”
