New England Patriots Reportedly Signing New QB

The New England Patriots have made a few changes to the roster. The team is adding depth to the roster, and they have signed quarterback Cody Kessler. There are no details of the terms of contracts.

The 26-year-old entered the league as a third-round draft selection by Cleveland in the 2016 NFL Draft out of Southern California. The 6-foot-1, 215-pounder has played in 17 regular-season games with 12 starts during his time with Cleveland and Jacksonville. Kessler has completed 224 of 345 passes for 2,215 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions. In his season with the Jaguars, the quarterback played five games with four starts and completed 65 of 131 passes for 709 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions while taking the Jaguars to a 2-2 record.

Kessler attended the Eagles training camp this summer and was released at the end of August.

We don’t know if Kessler will move into the second spot on the depth chart behind Tom Brady, but we know that head coach Bill Belichick didn’t like Stidham’s performance during the Patriots 30-14 win over the New York Jets.

Belichick didn’t give the rookie a good review after the game.

“Well, we’ll look at the film,” Belichick said when asked about the rookie’s performance. “There will be a lot of things we can do better there — coaching, playing. There’s room for improvement from everybody. Hopefully we’ll all get back to work this week and try to take another step forward.”

Belichick pulled Brady from the game, and four plays later Jamal Adams returned an interception 61 yards for a touchdown. Stidham was pulled from the field, and replaced by Brady who was the Patriots’ quarterback for the final three possessions. Stidham finished the game 2 of 3 for 14 yards.

Stidham is a fourth-round pick of the 2019 NFL draft. He became a backup quarterback and Brian Hoyer was cut. Stidham was brilliant in the presason. He threw for 731 yards and ranked second in the league. Maybe the Patriots could bring Hoyer back, but he signed with the Indianapolis Colts after being released in August.
