Mohamed Sanu Releases Statement On Whether He’ll Play Vs. Browns

Mohamed Sanu joined the New England Patriots in a trade on Wednesday. Head coach Bill Belichick gave up a second-round pick for Sanu, a 30-year-old whose contract extends through the 2020 season.

Sanu may play with the team against the Cleveland Browns.

“We’ll see what the plan is. I’m ready if they want me to go.” He added that it was “bittersweet” to leave the Falcons, but he’s “excited to build a relationship w/a “new fanbase &community.”

Belichick has been connected with Rutgers for years. The Patriots like drafting and signing Scarlet Knights from the Greg Schiano era. Schiano was briefly serving as the Patriots defensive coordinator for the team in 2019 before he resigned after a few weeks on the position. Former Rutgers standouts have lingered on the Patriots’ roster, including Devin McCourty and Duron Harmon. Sanu is the latest addition.

“We go way back. We saw everybody at Rutgers,” Belichick said during a press conference at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday.

The veteran wideout will join a group of receivers comprised of Julian Edelman, Josh Gordon, Phillip Dorsett, Jakobi Meyers and Gunner Olszewski. N’Keal Harry is a first-round pick and he will return from injured reserve in Week 9.

Sanu spent most of his time in the sloth, but head coach Bill Belichick didn’t say much about his role on the team.

“He’s a very experienced receiver. He’s had a lot of production. Excited to have him. We’ll see how it goes,” Belichick said.

“We haven’t even been on the field yet. It would be a little early for all that. … We’ve moved receivers around for 20 years. Sometimes guys play in one spot. Sometimes they play in different spots. Depends on the formation, game plan, play, personnel and so forth. We’ll see how it goes.”

“I think each player is a little bit different and it’s more about the game plan than it is about starting at day one and going through the installation schedule,” Belichick said. “The most important thing for a player coming onto the team is the immediate game. We’ll focus most of our attention there.”
