Patriots Teammates Give Jonathan Jones Great, Deserved Nickname

Jonathan Jones has become one of the key players in New England, and his teammates decided to give him a nickname.

Nick Underhill from The Athletic released a piece Tuesday, and discussed the new nickname Jones has. “Little bodybuilder.”

Patriots players were impressed with Jones’ small stature and impressive physique. Well, this guy spends a lot of time in the weight room.

“You see him in there on the squat bar,” Patriots special teams star Matthew Slater said, “and you’re like, ‘Wait, that guy can do that much weight?’ It’s really impressive, and I think that’s a testament to not only his work ethic and his commitment to the game, but he’s got a lot of God-given ability. I think what you see now at this point in his career is the culmination of that ability with his work ethic, and the weight room’s been a big part of that.”

Jones became a Patriot in 2016. He is one of the Patriots’ most reliable defensive backs. His physical strength earned him a new contract and a new nickname.

“He’s working on his beach body,” cornerback Jason McCourty joked.

His brother, Devin, was among the first to defend Jones for the Josh Allen hit.

“It’s a bang-bang play,” McCourty said. “I know you guys watched it. The guy’s (Allen) running, he’s leaning forward trying to get a first down. Duron (Harmon) wraps up his legs, J. Jones is just trying to make sure he doesn’t get the first down.”

Head coach Bill Belichick defended his player, too. Belichick is impressed with Jones’ game, and he told media members that he is an excellent runner and a strong guy.

“When there really isn’t anything you can tell him to do differently, then I think you don’t tell him anything,” Belichick said in a conference call. “I mean, Allen’s a big runner. He’s a strong guy. He’s hard to tackle. He certainly broke several tackles against us. Jon turned when he hit him. He didn’t lead with his head. He didn’t have that posture.”

Will Jones like his new nickname? Maybe he has a nickname for each of his teammates, too.
