Stephon Gilmore Destroys Amari Cooper, Proves He’s NFL’s Best Corner

The game between the New England Patriots and Dallas Cowboys was the biggest challenge for Stephon Gilmore. The Patriots corner had his greatest test of the season. Yes, he passed it. Amari Cooper had zero chances against him.

Gilmore held the three-time Pro Bowl receiver to zero catches on two targets in the 13-9 win over the Cowboys at Gillette Stadium. The corner had his fourth interception of the regular season and broke up a pass in the end zone to headline another dominant performance by the Patriots’ top-ranked defense.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick had words of praise for his corner. Belichick noted that Gilmore prepares really hard for his games, and he actually sees each game as a personal challenge. They had a really good receivers, and Dak Prescott was also good. The Cowboys have a good offense, but Stephon Gilmore tried really hard to keep everything under control. Gilmore knows his opponents inside out, and knows how to get the best play.

“This was another great effort by Steph,” Bill Belichick said. “He just works and prepares so hard for his matchups every week, and takes those as such a personal challenge. Obviously, this is a very good group of receivers, and a great quarterback (Dak Prescott) and a great offensive line. But Steph’s as professional as they come. He knows the opponents inside out, and his matchups, and the overall scheme and how to best play based on what our call is and what the situation is and so forth. He does a great job of that, so certainly a good day for him.”

When asked whether he was confident about his game against Amari Cooper, Stephon said, “Yeah.”

Amari Cooper had zero chance

He believes in himself, and works every day. Gilmore is self-confident about his skills on the field, and he can pull out a lot of great moves.

Cooper is one of the NFL’s most productive receivers since the Oakland Raiders traded him to Dallas midway through the last season. Gilmore is honest about his opponents, and he admits that Cooper is a great receiver. According to the corner, Cooper is one of the best receivers in the league. However, he was also confident about his game on the game.

“He’s good,” said Gilmore. “He’s a good player, quick. He’s one of the best receivers in the league. But I’m confident in myself.”

Belichick has total confidence in Gilmore, and he always shadows the opponent’s No. 1 wideout. We saw him confront JuJu Smith-Schuster, Odell Beckham Jr., Golden Tate, Robby Anderson and Terry McLaurin.

In the last six games, Gilmore allowed just 12 catches on 32 targets for 121 yards with three interceptions and seven pass breakups. The corner has yet to allow a touchdown pass in the regular season.

Safety Duron Harmon agrees that Stephon is the best corner in the league, and he proves that “week after week.”

“Steph is the best corner in the league,” safety Duron Harmon said. “He’s consistently proven that week after week. We’ve put him on whoever, and he goes out there and plays well. We knew he was going to play well today, and he’s a big reason why we won the game.”
