Patriots Free Agent Devin McCourty Reveals His Plans For Upcoming Season

Patriots free agent Devin McCourty has no plans to retire this offseason.

“He wants to play,” McCourty’s agent, Andy Simms, said. “Retirement is not an option.”

“I definitely see me playing football next year,” McCourty said after the 20-13 loss to the Titans.

“I’ve had a lot of fun this year with this group of guys. Each year, we get young guys in here, get to stay in the locker room, mold (these) guys, tell them stories of my past 10 years and how much fun I’ve had,” McCourty said.

“So, I can’t see it happening, me not playing football next year. So, I think over time, I’ll take some time away from football and I think the rest will kind of work itself out. We’ll see how that goes, but I definitely plan to be playing.”

McCourty And Brady Hitting Free Agency March 18

McCourty is set to hit free agency March 18 at 4 p.m. ET, same as quarterback Tom Brady. However, New England has exclusive negotiating rights with McCourty until March 16. The 32-year-old Patriots safety was also a free agent back in 2015. Then, he signed a five-year, $47.5 million contract to stay with the Patriots.

2019 was one of the best seasons for the Patriots free agent, having intercepted five passes, breaking up seven and forced two fumbles while serving as a captain on the NFL’s top defense.

The Patriots have over $28 million in cap space but a large chunk of that could go to Brady. McCourty’s twin brother, cornerback Jason McCourty also plays for the Patriots. He has a team option in his contract for 2020 and a cap hit of $5.75 million. That is still considered a bargain for a starting-caliber cornerback.

Releasing Jason McCourty could save Patriots $4 million in cap space. He has also dealt with a lingering groin injury late in the 2019 season.
