Devin McCourty Addresses Patriots’ Latest Coaching Hire

The New England Patriots missed the chance to snatch another Lombardi Trophy. The defending Super Bowl champions were eliminated from the playoff run following their wild-card loss to the Tennessee Titans. This loss opened the door for a few major changes, and one of these includes hiring an assistant coach. Patriots safety Devin McCourty approves the most recent hire.

The Patriots hired former practice squad player Vinnie Sunseri, and McCourty gave the green light. McCourty discussed the hire on a recent episode of his “Double Coverage with the McCourty Twins” podcast.

“He was in New England while I was there, in the safety room,” the safety said. “Very energetic, funny guy. All you New Englanders that watch this, you’re getting an energized guy, a that knows the game. He coached at Alabama. His dad (Sal Sunseri) is a coach, so he’s one of those kids that they say, ‘He’s a coach’s son.’

“He understands technique. Understands leverage. He understands everything because he does it perfectly, and now he is also following in his dad’s steps. His older brother (Tino Sunseri) actually a coach, too, that was at Alabama. Vinnie was there in the spring and was hanging out with him. So I’m happy to see him in New England. I think he’ll be a very bright mind added to the coaching staff.”

Hire for the win

Sunseri was safety and special teams player for the New Orleans Saints, the Patriots and the San Francisco 49ers in the period between 2014 and 2016. He was also a graduate assistant at Alabama in 2019. It looks like New England made a really good choice.

Sunseri will be of great help for the team, and they need every bit of talent in the organization to keep winning games. This season wasn’t their best, and the Pats didn’t win a Super Bowl. However, this hire is a clear sign that the team strives towards improvement. The coaching staff is first on their list. Tom Brady is next. The quarterback is set to become a free agent in March, and the team will have to try hard to sign him again. They can’t lose Brady in free agency.
