Patriots Cornerback Joejuan Williams Reportedly Arrested

According to recent reports, the New England Patriots cornerback Joejuan Williams was arrested on drug possession charges.

A Tennessee Highway Patrol officer allegedly found “an unnamed controlled substance, prescription drugs and drug paraphernalia,” in Williams’ vehicle.

The report included a mugshot of Williams. It stated that the 22-year-old Nashville native “is facing charges for speeding, possession of a controlled substance, possession of legend drugs without a prescription and possession of drug paraphernalia.”

Williams got selected in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft (45th overall) out of Vanderbilt. The cornerback signed a four-year deal worth $6.6 million in the weeks after the draft. As a rookie, he played in 10 games, including one postseason game. He finished with four tackles and one pass deflection.

“This is another year where there’s a lot of big receivers. I mean, somebody’s going to have to cover those guys one of these days,” said coach Belichick after signing Williams.

“If teams are going to be three-receiver sets in the majority of offensive formations, then you better be ready to put five defensive backs on the field and be ready to have a slot corner,” he added.

Williams Was Off To A Good Start

During the final two weeks of the regular season, Williams played a season-high 29 defensive snaps against Buffalo. He then made two stops during the Patriots’ loss to Miami in their finale. Against the Dolphins, he substituted for injured corners Jason McCourty and Jonathan Jones.

Williams later took five defensive snaps in the team’s Wild Card playoff loss to the Titans.

Aside from taking reserve reps and covering tight ends in a specialist role, Williams’ on-field future role remains fairly unclear.

Patriots cornerback Joejuan Williams was one of three defensive rookies to see action in 2019.
