It’s the 20th anniversary of the trade that brought Bill Belichick to New England. He was traded from the New York Jets to the New England Patriots. The Patriots gave their fanbase a sneak peek into the deal. Monday morning, the team released a picture of the letter between Robert Kraft and Bill Parcells that sent head coach Bill Belichick to Foxboro for draft picks.

“This letter is intended to memorialize our conversation from last night, which occurred around 11:00pm. The New York Jets hereby grant permission to the New England Patriots to talk to Bill Belichick about any position they desire.

“If Bill Belichick accepts and assumes a position with the New England Patriots, and reports to work on or before Monday, January 2000 then, the New York Jets trade to the New England Patriots their 5th round pick in the 2001 annual NFL selection draft, and the New England Patriots trade their 1st round pick in the 2000 annual NFL selection draft (16th overall), their 4th pick in the 2001 annual NFL selection draft, and their 7th round pick in the 2001 annual NFL draft. Formal trade papers will follow, and all copies will be filed with the league office.”

The trade letter revealed a good deal

According to this letter, the two parties had discussed the trade the night before. They worked until nearly midnight to finish the deal. The letter also includes the address of Kraft’s office in Boston. The owner’s operations had not yet moved to Foxboro. At the bottom of the letter, we can see one of the individuals CC’ed on the notice is Jeff Pash. Pash became a central figure in the Deflategate problem.

The Patriots will enter one of the most important offseasons in the Brady-Belichick era. The season was brought to an end a lot earlier as the Patriots were eliminated from the playoff run. Tom Brady will have to make a decision about his future step. He will have to choose between the New England Patriots and any other team. Brady will hit free agency in March. There’s also an option for him to retire. But, we believe he will stay in Foxboro.
