Report: Patriots To Sign Former Receiver In Offseason

The New England Patriots missed the chance to win a Super Bowl this season, but it looks like they are ready to win the title in 2020. Will Tom Brady stay with the team for the upcoming season? Sources reveal that the Patriots may sign a former receiver.

Danny Amendola.

New England considers re-signing Amendola, and this move is tightly linked to Brady’s contract situation. Amendola was one of Brady’s favorite targets during his tenure with the Pats.

This report doesn’t come as a surprise. The Patriots failed in 2019 because Brady had a hard time building chemistry with his receivers. Julian Edelman is the only wide receiver to have success with the team. Mohamed Sanu arrived in New England, but that wasn’t enough. Sanu had to learn the playbook and adjust to a new offensive system in the middle of the season. He had just 26 receptions for 207 yards and a touchdown. With the Atlanta Falcons, he caught 33 passes for 313 yards and a touchdown in eight games.

Will the Patriots sign a former receiver to keep Brady?

Bringing Amendola back will be of great help for the Pats. In his five seasons as a Patriot, Amendola was able to catch 230 balls for 2,383 yards and 12 touchdowns. New England won two Super Bowls and had another appearance.

“Don’t be surprised if Tom Brady reunites with an old flame in free agency this offseason. Brady has stayed close with former New England Patriots wide receiver Danny Amendola, who also will be a free agent this offseason. Brady could try to bring along Amendola to his next destination, and that could include both players returning to New England, a source with knowledge of the situation told NESN.com.”

When it comes to Brady’s future plans, Troy Aikman doesn’t see him wearing a different uniform.

“That is something that I’m proud of playing for one organization,” Aikman said Tuesday at FOX Sports Media Day. “And I think it’s probably what Tom wants. There’s always the lure of wanting to prove you can do it somewhere else. And that’s only natural, but I would be surprised if he’s playing anywhere else other than New England. I don’t think it’s what the owner (Robert Kraft) wants. Deep down, I don’t think it’s what Tom wants. And I don’t anticipate it happening. I hope it doesn’t happen. I’m not sure the fans want that either.”
