Exclusive: Markieff Morris Plans To Sign With Lakers

The Los Angeles Lakers haven’t added a new name to the roster, but it looks like veteran small forward Markieff Morris is about to sign a contract with the team. The Athletic’s Shams Charania was among the first to confirm the information. The veteran got a buyout from the Detroit Pistons on Friday.

Markieff’s brother, Marcus Morris, plays with the Los Angeles Clippers at the moment. Can you imagine the Morris brothers playing against each other in the battle for a title should the two rivals meet in the playoffs? That would be an interesting game to watch.

When it comes to Markieff and his performance, the veteran appeared in 44 games for the Pistons this season. He averaged 11.0 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.6 assists while shooting 45.0 percent from the field, 39.7 percent from beyond the arc and 77.2 percent from the free-throw line.

Markieff Morris to LA?

The veteran inked a two-year contract worth $6.5 million with the Pistons in free agency this past summer. In 2018-19, he spent some time with the Washington Wizards and Oklahoma City Thunder.

During that campaign, Morris averaged 9.4 points, 4.6 rebounds and 1.4 assists while shooting 42.1 percent from the floor, 33.5 percent from the 3-point line and 77.2 percent from the free-throw line. His career NBA averages go at 11.6 points, 5.4 rebounds and 1.7 assists in 623 NBA contests.

Markieff would definitely be a pleasant surprise for the Lakers fanbase. He is an excellent player, and his experience would be of great help on the court. Although the Lakers don’t need any help at the moment, they do need a third hand in the process. The Lakers have built an incredible bond on the court, and they own the best record in the NBA. At this moment, the team has the best record in the Western Conference at 41-12. This looks more than attractive for Markieff. If he ends up playing with LeBron and Davis, they’d definitely win a title together. It will be fun to watch Markieff play against his brother and the Clippers. That would be a big battle for the brothers.
