Report: Patriots’ Joe Cardona Undergoes Shoulder Surgery

Everyone was so focused on Super Bowl LIV and Tom Brady’s pending free agency. NFL fans didn’t even mention minor injuries, surgeries, contracts, cuts… ESPN’s Mike Reiss released a report on New England Patriots long snapper Joe Cardona. According to this report, Joe Cardona underwent a shoulder surgery to fix a minor injury. Reiss also reported that the procedure “shouldn’t have a major impact on Cardona’s offseason.”

Cardona played in every contest of the season. He arrived in New England as a fifth-round pick in 2015. He was also a lieutenant in the United States Navy Reserve.

Joe Cardona is expected to return after his surgery

Reiss also provided more information about the 27-year-old.

“Joe Cardona, who will enter his sixth season as the Patriots’ long-snapper in 2020, had shoulder surgery within the past few weeks, according to a source. The surgery shouldn’t have a major impact on Cardona’s offseason, but it is a reminder that players at his often overlooked position are subject to the same physical rigors as others — specifically when snapping and then getting in position to protect on field goals and punts. One other leftover on Cardona: He successfully worked behind the scenes during the year with others to have snappers voted to the Pro Bowl, and this season marked the first time that it was no longer a coach’s choice as a “need” position. The Ravens’ Morgan Cox represented the AFC.”

Cardona has three years left of his four-year contract worth $4.3 million. He inked the deal in 2018.

The Patriots were plagued with injuries in 2019, and Julian Edelman is the only player to play through an injury. Fellow wide receiver Mohamed Sanu praised his ability to hit the field with an injury. Hopefully, New England will enter the upcoming season with a healthy roster. Tom Brady hasn’t missed a game due to an injury, and the Patriots will need him in 2020.

This season wasn’t successful for New England but they will prepare better for the next one. First, they have to solve Brady’s contract situation, and then, they need to surround him with talented wide receivers. Head coach Bill Belichick will take care of that.
