Jason McCourty Celebrates Patriots Officially Picking Up His Option

The New England Patriots decided to up the team option in cornerback Jason McCourty and his contract. The information was confirmed by several sources including ESPN’s Field Yates.

Several reports suggested that the Patriots planned to keep McCourty on the roster. The cornerback is recovering from an offseason surgery. McCourty will carry a salary-cap hit of $5.5 million this season.

Devin’s twin brother took to Twitter to express his excitement.

McCourty will turn 33 in August. The cornerback missed most of the second half of the 2019 season due to a groin injury. However, he played really well before that. McCourty posted a 63.3 passer rating against zero touchdowns allowed in 10 starts, as confirmed by Pro Football Focus.

Will Tom Brady join Jason McCourty

The entire 2019 cornerback group comprised of McCourty, Stephon Gilmore, J.C. Jackson, Jonathan Jones, Joejuan Williams, and D’Angelo Ross is under contract for the upcoming season. The same applies to recently signed Lenzy Pipkins.

We don’t know whether McCourty’s twin brother, Devin, will join the team in 2020. The veteran safety and longtime team co-captain will become an unrestricted free agent this offseason. The NFL league year opens on March 18. He will definitely see a strong market after playing at a Pro Bowl level in 2019.

Devin is one of 19 players to leave New England in free agency. This group also includes star quarterback Tom Brady, linebackers Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins, guard Joe Thuney and special teams captain Matthew Slater.

This is a rather intriguing development for the New England Patriots. Keeping Brady on the roster is a priority at the moment. However, some say that head coach Bill Belichick may decide to move on from Brady. The star quarterback suffered minor injuries in 2019 and he will turn 43. This may affect Belichick’s decision to offer Brady a deal.

New England is all-in when it comes to winning games, and they have already signed a few new names. But, Brady is a top priority, and he makes the best headlines these days. Who is staying in New England? Let’s wait and find out.
