The New England Patriots are entering a new era, and Tom Brady won’t be part of it. TB12 decided to take his talents to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He moved on from the Patriots after two decades of dominance on the field. Some of his former teammates are staying in New England. Devin McCourty is one of them. McCourty shared his thoughts on Brady and his departure.
In a Players’ Tribune piece published on Tuesday, the veteran discussed Brady’s departure. McCourty also said that he found out on social media. We all did. But, the veteran had a gut feeling about the whole situation. He sort of predicted that Brady is making his way somewhere else.
“I kind of knew when we got closer to free agency and he didn’t have a deal done that he wasn’t coming back,” he wrote. “It’s still a little surreal because … it’s TOM, you know? He’s been here 20 years. Brady’s won six rings. He’s the greatest to ever do it. So it definitely won’t be the same now that he’s gone. But honestly, I’m happy for him. He’s earned the right to finish his career wherever he wants and chase whatever he feels like he needs to chase. I’m just glad he’s doing it in the NFC.”
Devin McCourty had similar plans as Brady
McCourty’s tenure in New England was almost brought to an end this year as well. In the same Players’ Tribune piece, he discussed his readiness to leave the Patriots and find a new challenge somewhere else. He didn’t do this, and decided to re-sign a contract for a total of $23 million. When it comes to new challenges, the veteran promised to help lead “this Patriots team into a new era and helping ensure that this next wave of players can continue our legacy and build on what we’ve already achieved as a franchise.”
