Report: Patriots Working Hard To Re-Sign Devin McCourty For Rest Of Career

Jason McCourty will join the New England Patriots in 2020. It looks like the team is trying really hard to get his twin brother on the roster, too. The Patriots want Devin McCourty in New England. Head coach Bill Belichick wants him on the roster.

The league’s legal tampering period will begin Monday. According to a report by NFL Media’s Ian Rapoport, New England is “working hard” to re-sign Devin to a contract. The new contract is supposed to keep the veteran safety “in New England for the rest of his career.

The Patriots may keep Devin McCourty

McCourty will turn 33 this summer. He has spent his entire career in New England. Originally a first-round pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, Devin played at a Pro Bowl level in 2019. He ranked second among Patriots defenders in defensive snaps played. This puts him right behind cornerback Stephon Gilmore. Devin pulled in five interceptions and passed his total from the previous four seasons combined (four).

He was Pro Football Focus’ eighth-highest-graded safety in 2019. Minnesota’s Anthony Harris (first), Denver’s Justin Simmons (second) and San Francisco’s Jimmie Ward (sixth) of all free agents ranked higher than Devin.

New England picked up the team option in cornerback Jason’s contract. Of their 19 impending free agents, just special teams captain Matthew Slater re-signed a contract with the team Sunday afternoon.

Quarterback Tom Brady, guard Joe Thuney and defensive starters McCourty, Kyle Van Noy, Jamie Collins and Danny Shelton and a few others will hit the open market on Wednesday.

The free agency period will open at 4 p.m. ET on Wednesday. Brady is the biggest name of the list. There are so many rumors regarding his free agency move. The San Francisco 49ers and Tennessee gave up on the chase. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and New England are the only potential suitors for the GOAT.

Brady has already talked to Bill Belichick. According to reports, he didn’t like the offer. Belichick offered him a one-year deal. He would get less than usual. In other words, it wasn’t an attractive offer. Let’s see if Brady is interested in going somewhere else.
