Bill Belichick Makes Honest Admission On Patriots Not Drafting Quarterback

The New England Patriots had to address several important topics during the 2020 NFL Draft. Bill Belichick needed tight ends, quarterback, wideouts, and a few other key players. New England picked 10 players in the 2020 NFL Draft. However, they didn’t get any quarterbacks to replace Tom Brady, 42. The star quarterback signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers on the first day of free agency.

New England may rely on second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham and journeyman quarterback Brian Hoyer.

Head coach Bill Belichick discussed the topic and the fact that his team didn’t pick a quarterback in the draft.

“The bottom line is that we’re evaluating that position along with all the other ones,” Belichick said of the quarterback position. “If we feel like we find the right situation, we’ll certainly draft them. We’ve drafted them in multiple years, multiple points in the draft. Didn’t work out last three days. That was not by design. It could have, but it did not.”

Bill Belichick may not go after a quarterback

Patriots director player of personnel Nick Caserio spoke to media members on Friday night. This call happened after the first three rounds of the draft. He was pretty convinced that the Patriots would sign another quarterback.

When asked if the Patriots plan to draft a quarterback on Saturday, Caserio was precise.

“We’re going to have a third quarterback on our roster, pair them up with Jarrett and Brian. We’re going to have another player here at this position. Where he comes from and how he gets here is sort of yet to be determined. There are a few guys I think that we like and we feel comfortable with. Now it’s just a matter of how we get them on the team.”

NFL teams selected 13 quarterbacks during the seven rounds of the 2020 NFL Draft.

Belichick didn’t target any of those picks. He was actually positive about the idea of moving on with his two quarterbacks.

“I like both those players,” the Patriots head coach said. “We’ve had Brian a couple times. I think he certainly gives us a very solid level of play. We have a lot of confidence in him. And Jarrett had a good year last year. He improved a lot. We’ll see where that takes him. Yeah, I have confidence in both players.”

The 23-year-old saw action in three games as a rookie. Stidham completed 2 of 4 passes for 14 yards with one interception.

Hoyer was part of the New England Patriots from 2009-11 and 2017-18. The Patriots brought him back in March, and offered him a one-year deal.

The veteran quarterback played 69 games with 38 starts in seven teams. He was able to complete 59.1 percent of his passes for 10,274 yards with 52 touchdowns and 34 interceptions.
