Mark Cuban Makes a Statement About NBA Return

Every basketball fan is waiting for the NBA to return. COVID-19 caught everyone off guard, and authorities have a hard time controlling the situation. It’s hard to do that when some people still go out and hang out with their friends, colleagues and random people. The NBA suspended the regular season after Rudy Gobert from the Utah Jazz came out positive for coronavirus. At least 14 other players have the virus. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver promised to provide an update, and fans are waiting for an official statement. The league is desperate to finish the season. Playing late in the summer may not be a bad idea. But, that would delay the start of the next season. Dallas Mavericks owner Marc Cuban shared his thoughts on the NBA return.

Cuban appeared on ESPN’s Get Up. He is fine with the idea of having the next season start on Christmas Day. Moreover, he’s been thinking about that change for quite some time. The current situation may actually turn it into reality.

“I have no idea,” Cuban said when asked about the return date. “The only thing I know is that we’re putting safety first and that we’re not gonna take any chances, we’re not gonna do anything that risks the health or safety of our players, our fans, our staff, our whole organizations, so right now, I really don’t have anything new to say.”

It may be hard for players to get used to this change. But, there may be some advantages.

“Honestly, it’s been something that I’ve been asking for more than 10 years. I’ve always thought that we should start on Christmas and go into the summer, but the response has always been that our television partners don’t want that because there are fewer households using television during the summer months. But everything is different right now. Particularly if we continue to be quarantined, then people are at home willing to watch the games. Nothing else is on other than SharkTank and SportsCenter and you guys, of course. But I think it really could be a great experiment for us, and if it works out well, then we could do it.”

Starting regular seasons in December removes competition with college football. There would be no overlap between the NBA and NFL regular seasons. The NBA will compete with Major League Baseball in the summer. We all know who wins that battle.

For experts, it’s all about safety. The health and safety of players go on top of everything. There have been no discussions about the return date. The NBA is on hold, and we will be waiting for an update.
