New England Patriots Fullback James Develin Retires

Fullback James Develin decided to put an end to his professional career. The Patriots fullback announced his retirement in a lengthy Instagram post on Monday. He was part of the New England Patriots for eight years and three Super Bowls.

The fullback spent four years at Brown as a defensive lineman. Develin recorded 149 tackles and 15 sacks, and then became fullback with the Florida Tuskers of the United Football League. Coach Jay Gruden helped him develop some really great skills. Develin joined the Cincinnati Bengals practice squad in the 2010 season. He was part of the team throughout the entire 2011 season.

Develin was cut at the end of training camp in 2012. The New England Patriots added him to the practice squad a few days later. Head coach Bill Belichick promoted him to the active roster on December 16th, 2012. Develin had his NFL debut against the San Francisco 49ers, and saw 12 snaps on special teams. This was the only game action of Develin’s first year in Foxboro.

Develin was cut out of training camp in 2013. He re-signed with the organization right on time and then joined them for the regular-season opener against the Buffalo Bills. The fullback had his first catch in Week 2. Develin had his first career touchdown in the game against the Houston Texans.

James Develin was a key player for the Patriots

In the period between 2013 and 2018, Develin was a key player for the Patriots. He was a fullback and member of the special teams. Develin missed the 2015 season due to the tibia fracture. He sustained the injury in training camp. Develin played in every game in his five active seasons. The talented fullback made the Pro Bowl in 2017. 2018 was his best year. He played the second-most fullback snaps in the NFL and hit four rushing touchdowns. He helped the last Patriots win their last title.

In Week 2 of the 2019 season, Develin suffered a neck injury. The team placed him on IR. They missed his talent on the field.

Develin finished his career for 31 catches for 222 yards and 15 carries with five rushing touchdowns.
