Report: Patriots Are Preparing To Pursue A ‘Left-Handed Drew Brees’

The New England Patriots are probably creating the perfect ground for landing a left-handed Drew Brees. Colin Cowherd doesn’t approve the idea of seeing Tua Tagovailoa in New England. However, he believes that the Pats may be getting ready to land the Alabama player.

The Herd host tried to connect the dots Friday on FOX Sports 1. New England has to solve the quarterback issue this offseason. According to Cowherd, the Pats will use a “premium” pick on a quarterback next week. The team only has one pick in the first two rounds. How will they use their No. 23 overall pick? The team will have to play really smart in order to get one of this year’s top QB prospects.

Is Tua Tagovailoa the new Drew Brees?

The Patriots bowl of total draft picks is fairly stocked. Head coach Bill Belichick will probably connect with the Detroit Lions. The Lions are ready to do business at No. 3. Cowherd believes that the Pats may be trying to add another quarterback. But, he also believes that the team may be trying to snatch Tagovailoa at this point of the offseason.

“First of all, Jarrett Stidham is not the future,” Cowherd said. “For anybody saying Jarrett Stidham is the future, uh, he’s not the future. Let’s get that off the table. Now, I do believe they want to get Trevor Lawrence next year or Justin Fields, but they may see Tua as I see Tua. I see Tua as a left-handed Drew Brees. Some injury concerns early in his career. Drew Brees, first year, some injury concerns. Tua, college, injury concerns. Too good to pass up, all-time accuracy. Too good to pass up. Didn’t have to wait, unlike Joe Burrow, for him to be a senior to be any good.”

Coach Belichick is a good friend with Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban. In other words, he knows pretty much everything about Tagovailoa.

In the Past, the Patriots have been more inclined to trade down rather than trade up in the NFL Draft. The team is entering a new era, and they no longer have Tom Brady. How will Belichick handle that?
