Update Emerges On Patriots’ Interest In Recently Released Tight End Trey Burton

The New England Patriots may not be interested in signing Trey Burton. Jeff Howe of The Athletic reported that the Patriots won’t sign the former Chicago Bears tight end. Chicago released Burton on Friday afternoon.

“There’s been some local fan interest in free-agent tight end Trey Burton, who was just released by the Bears. But at the moment, it looks like a long shot that Burton would wind up with the Patriots, per source.”

The tight end saw action in only eight games last season as he underwent a hip surgery. Burton was able to catch just 14 passes for 84 yards before the team placed him on injured reserve. In 2018, the tight end had a banner year. He started 18 games in 2018 and caught 54 passes for 569 yards and six touchdowns. Burton actually led the Bears to their first playoff berth in eight seasons.

Trey Burton is in his primetime

Burton is in his prime and he is 28 years. New England needs a tight end. Rob Gronkowski retired and Benjamin Watson decided to retirement this offseason. The Patriots used Watson as a starting tight end for the last half of the last season.

New England has Ryan Izzo and Matt LaCosse at tight end position. They split snaps before Watson took over the job. But, both players underwhelmed while taking over for Gronk. They combined for just 19 receptions, 245 yards and two touchdowns.

The 2020 NFL Draft will take place next weekend. The Patriots will try to fill the void. If they don’t get Burton, he will stay on the free market.

This will be a rather surprising draft for the Patriots. They will try to add a few important players in 2020. Tom Brady is gone, so Belichick may also try to sign a quarterback.

Belichick and Co. will have to work really hard to fill up the voids Brady, Kyle Van Noy and the rest players created with their departure. Let’s see what happens in the next few weeks. How will Belichick finish the draft run? Will he try to add a new quarterback? Belichick never misses a good chance.
