Peter King Mystified By This One Decision Patriots Made In NFL Draft

The New England Patriots decided not to select a quarterback in the 2020 NFL Draft. But, they didn’t pick a wide receiver either. Peter King from NBC Sports was sort of surprised.

“I’m pretty much mystified by that,” he said on “The Michael Holley Podcast.”

The 2020 wide receiver class was pack with talent. Many say this was one of the best WR classes in league history. However, the Pats decided to stick with their plan.

“Look at where the game is going,” King explained. “Last year, the 49ers with the 36th pick in the draft take (wide receiver) Deebo Samuel. You watched the Super Bowl, he’s one of the five best players on the field in the Super Bowl. And now you look this year, and they trade up from 31 to go get Brandon Aiyuk (at No. 25), another receiver they felt was the best all-around receiver this year in the draft … So, they have expended great draft capital in the last couple of years on the receiver position, and that to me is where the game is going.”

The Patriots made interesting picks in the 2020 NFL Draft

Bill Belichick and Co. picked N’Keal Harry in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft. This was the first time Belichick has selected a wide receiver in the first round of a draft.

New England added ten players through the draft. They have a safety, three linebackers, three offensive linemen, two tight ends and a kicker. Why didn’t the team add a wideout to the group comprised of Harry, Julian Edelman, Mohamed Sanu, Jakobi Meyers and Marqise Lee?

“When I saw what the Patriots did in the draft this year, the first thought that went through my mind is, ‘Bill’s trying to build a team that will win games 16-13,’ ” King added.

Maybe he is right. Maybe Coach B has a nice backup plan that will work really well in September. The Patriots will play without Tom Brady, Kyle Van Noy, and many others. Yes, he will enter the 2020 season with a brand new roster. Belichick’s plan may seem crazy and mysterious, but his plans always work. We have seen that on multiple occasions. Belichick and Brady have won six Super Bowls together. Coach B knows what he is doing.
