Report: Cam Newton and Patriots Had Discussions In Free Agency

Veteran quarterback Cam Newton was linked with the New England Patriots and many other NFL teams, but the market to sign him has cooled over the past few weeks. That’s what ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler reported.

The talented quarterback may wait until NFL teams resume regular activity following the blockage caused by the coronavirus pandemic. Teams will be given a chance to check his health and even talk to him in person. Will Newton ever agree to a backup job? According to some sources, the quarterback and the Patriots talked early during his free agency. However, these talks didn’t give him a contract or anything similar.

The Carolina Panthers released the 31-year-old, and he has been free agent ever since. The team decided to cut ties after nine years with the quarterback they selected No. 1 overall in 2011.

Newton has most of the Panthers’ career passing records. He missed 14 games in 2019`due to a Lisfranc injury in the left foot. He also missed the final two games of the 2018 season due to a shoulder injury that forced him to undergo a surgery. Newton had a surgery for the Lisfranc injury in December.

On March 23, Newton had a physical that was coordinated by the Panthers and his agency as confirmed by ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Newton passed his physical and his physical condition is really great. Schefter reported that both his shoulder and foot are “checking out well.”

Cam Newton is a good fit for the Patriots

The Patriots could have used Newton’s talent really well, but head coach Bill Belichick didn’t want to get him. Belichick is satisfied with Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer. The second-year quarterback is expected to start games with the Patriots in 2020. Some analysts also believe that Belichick will use Hoyer as a starting quarterback in September.

New England will have a few months to make a decision on the quarterback situation. The team lost Tom Brady in free agency, and he is now under contract with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both sides are confident about the upcoming season, and Brady will return to Foxboro in 2021 to play his first game against his former team.
