Report: Patriots Considered Signing Clay Matthews

The New England Patriots had a lot of questions to address prior to the 2020 NFL Draft. They needed to cover several positions. Head coach Bill Belichick and Nick Caserio addressed one of the biggest needs the organizations had by drafting three linebackers. However, before the draft, they were seeing other options to add depth to the group. According to Jeremy Fowler from ESPN, the Patriots wanted Clay Matthews.

In his report, Fowler highlighted the five most “intriguing” draft classes in 2020. The Patriots were focused on Josh Uche, and the team traded up in the second round to get him.

Fowler wrote about Uche and the fact that he may have been a nugget on the Patriots’ interest in a veteran linebacker.

“There was some leaguewide buzz that the Patriots considered signing free agent Clay Matthews for pass-rushing help, but that was before they landed outside linebacker Josh Uche out of Michigan in the second round, No. 60 overall.”

Is Clay Matthews still an option?

The Los Angeles Rams cut Matthews a few days into the new NFL season. The veteran had an incredible season with the Rams. He had eight sacks and missed just three games after breaking his jaw. The six-time Pro Bowl selection has yet to find a home in the NFL. Is he an option for Bill Belichick?

The New England Patriots may not be interested in signing Matthews now. But, seeing Belichick get him wouldn’t come as a surprise.

The Patriots are entering a new season and they will do that without Tom Brady as starting quarterback. Brady is playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. But, the Patriots have a talented quarterback and Jarrett Stidham is pretty much everything the team needs. Brian Hoyer will have to compete for a spot, and there’s a minor chance for him to get the big spot.

New England has a group of talented receivers. Belichick got the players he needed for the season. The team selected 10 players and signed 15 undrafted players. Let’s see what happens in September. It’s a big season for every player on the Patriots roster. Game on! You have a title to win.
