Report: Patriots’ Projected Compensation For Losing Tom Brady

The New England Patriots lost the greatest quarterback of all time. Tom Brady took his talents to Tampa and he is more than ready to join a new team. What will the Patriots receive for losing the GOAT? NFL Media’s Lance Zierlein has a projection that brings a third-round pick to Foxboro. The team will see a compensation for Tom Brady.

New England lost a lot of talented players in free agency with TB12 being the biggest name in the group. The Patriots may not be able to recover from the loss, however, they will definitely receive compensatory picks in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Acording to Zierlein, NFL teams will receive compensatory picks between Rounds 3 and 7. This compensation is created according to an NFL formula that uses average salary per year (APY), snap count and postseason awards for players who signed with another team in free agency.

A compensation for Tom Brady

Bill Belichick and Co. received a league-high four compensatory picks in the 2020 NFL Draft. That’s the maximum allowed by the league. The team lost offensive tackles Trent Brown and LaAdrian Waddle, defensive end Trey Flowers, defensive tackle Malcom Brown, wide receivers Cordarrelle Patterson and Chris Hogan and cornerback Eric Rowe. They only added running back Brandon Bolden to the roster.

The NFL Management Council’s formula will determine the comp picks. New England lost Brady, Kyle Van Noy and Jamie Collins without signing a major name in free agency.

Zierlein projected New England to add three compensatory picks in the 2021 NFL Draft. They will have a one third-rounder and two third-rounders.

“The formula is very straightforward here, with the Patriots losing five qualifiers and collecting two free agents with very modest contracts to cancel out the lower-end free agents. The contracts for Brady and Van Noy will clearly garner a third-round pick and a fourth-rounder, respectively, while Collins is likely to bring in a fourth.”

A lot of things may change in the next few months. This projection gives us an idea as to what the Patriots may get after Brady and other high-profile players left the organization. Let’s see if Zierlein is right about his projection. How will Belichick use his picks?
