The 5 Most Underrated Patriots Ahead of the 2020 NFL Season

New England will enter the 2020 NFL season with a bunch of underrated Patriots players. Several players left the team in free agency to join different organizations. They signed great deals, and their work in New England sure paid off. Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy and Danny Shelton left the Pats to find their home somewhere else.

However, the Patriots still have a good group of talented players. Of course, these players don’t really get too much attention from the media.

The best underrated Patriots

Let’s take Lawrence Guy for example. Head coach Bill Belichick really likes his offensive tackle because of his talent and versatility. Guy played a lot of positions on the Patriots’ defensive front in 2019. However, Belichick uses him as a space-eating interior player. Guy finished the last season with 61 tackles, five for a loss, five quarterback hits, three sacks and an interception in 16 games.

Adam Butler played behind Guy and Shelton in 2019. He had a role above Michael Bennett so he left the team. Butler improved his talent in the first few years in the league, and he may be given an even bigger role.

Jonathan Jones is another underrated player on the team. “Passes thrown to middle-of-the-field targets (between the numbers) while Jones was in coverage resulted in incompletions at the fifth-highest rate among corners in the NFL last season, per my computer vision,” Cynthia Frelund wrote.

J.C. Jackson has been helping the team own the perimeters and the deep areas of the field. Pro Football Focus really likes him and his skills. “Since 2018, he has been targeted 29 times 20 or more yards downfield — on those plays, he has allowed just three receptions compared to six interceptions and 10 forced incompletions.”

David Andrews missed the 2019 season due to blood clots in the lungs. The offense really missed him. Running back Sony Michel “may have seen the biggest slump from 2018 (with Andrews) to 2019 (without him).” He ran for 4.5 yards per carry in 2018 and 3.7 yards per carry in 2019.

Let’s see what happens in 2020 with these guys on the roster.
