Latest Update on Joe Thuney, Sony Michel’s Foot Surgery

The New England Patriots will enter a regular NFL season without Tom Brady. The quarterback left the Pats and signed a two-year deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. How will head coach Bill Belichick and the rest of the organization handle this change? Will Jarrett Stidham go under center? Will Brian Hoyer stick around for long enough to teach him? Replacing TB12 isn’t the only obstacle the Patriots have at the moment. They will also have to take care of Joe Thuney and Sony Michel’s foot surgery.

Thuney was a second-team All-Pro in 2019 and he was an important part of the Patriots offense. But, Thuney was given the franchise tag this offseason and the Pats may get rid of him in the near future. In April, Peter King from NBC Sports said that Thuney may join a different team in the NFL Draft.

According to recent reports, the Patriots may trade add Thuney to the trading block.

“Would they take a big swing on someone like New England’s franchise-tagged All-Pro guard, Joe Thuney? Based on what I know…I think they’d at least explore it,” Albert Breer of The MMQB wrote. “But, again, that’s probably more of a down-the-road contingency thing for now.”

Sony Michel recovers from his foot surgery

What about Michel? Is he ready for training camp? Mike Reiss from ESPN reported that Michel had recovers from his foot surgery.

“New England Patriots starting running back Sony Michel is recovering from surgery on his foot in May, according to sources. The surgery was viewed as more maintenance-based to help relieve discomfort that Michel had been experiencing. … How Michel progresses will ultimately determine whether he starts training camp on the physically unable to perform list.”

If Michel doesn’t join the Pats in training camp, second-year running back Damien Harris will see more action than he did in his rookie campaign. The third-round selection had four carries in 2019, and he is definitely ready to boost his numbers. The Patriots can really use his talent in the upcoming season. Michel and Thuney have a key roles and head coach Bill Belichick needs their dominance.
