The New England Patriots will try to reinforce their roster now that quarterback Tom Brady is gone. The star quarterback left the Patriots after twenty years and joined the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Brady, Jamie Collins, Kyle Van Noy, and other key contributors left the team in free agency. According to at least one NFL analyst, the Patriots should consider trading another key player.
Kristopher Knox of Bleacher Report talked about this possibility. His analysis of “1 Player Each NFL Team Should Consider Trading Before the 2020 Season” won’t really surprise many people.
The Patriots may be interested in trading a talented guard
According to Knox, the Patriots should consider trading guard Joe Thuney. The organization tagged him several months ago and now they have to upgrade the roster. Knox is convinced that Thuney has a lot of potential trade value, and the Patriots may use this. Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated suggested that the Philadelphia Eagles should trade for the Patriots guard to replace Brandon Brooks.
“New England should, therefore, consider any and all avenues of upgrading its roster,” Knox explained. “One could involve trading franchise-tagged guard Joe Thuney. While Thuney is a fantastic offensive lineman, he also carries a ton of potential trade value. According to Sports Illustrated’s Albert Breer, the Philadelphia Eagles could explore trading for him to replace the injured Brandon Brooks.”
Knox also said that the franchise tag makes the guard the second-highest-paid guard in the league. Thuney has little incentive “to be clamoring for a contract extension.”
Things may get even worse. There’s still a chance for Thuney to leave the Patriots in free agency. In this way, he would leave the Patriots with empty hands.
The Patriots selected Thuney No. 78 overall in the 2016 NFL Draft. He has started all 64 games for the team and earned Second-Team All-Pro honors in 2019. Thuney also won the PFWA All-Rookie honors in 2016.
Let’s see how will things turn for the Patriots in 2020. Let’s see how will things turn for Thuney. Head coach Bill Belichick will probably do a lot of thinking. He will have to adjust his winning formula. But, first, he will have to replace Tom Brady.
