Predicting The 2020 New England Patriots Team Captains

Patriots team captains have an incredible role in the organization, and many players would agree on this one. Safety Devin McCourty and former Patriots quarterback Tom Brady said being named a captain is a prized title.

The name of yearly captains are confirmed a week before the start of the regular season. The 53-man roster votes and they make a decision. Brady was an 18-time roster, and he is gone now. TB12 left the Patriots after two decades, and he is now playing with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Linebacker Elandon Roberts was a first-time captain and former Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski was a two-time captain. Gronk joined Brady in Tampa Bay, and they will join forces in the upcoming season.

The team has six captains. In 2019, the Patriots voted for seven captains. In 2016, they had five. When it comes to 2020, some players will definitely keep their role. Special teams standout Matthew Slater and Devin McCourty have been team captains since 2011. They are keeping that position in 2020. Center David Andrews was named a captain in 2019 despite the fact that he missed the entire season. Andrews is also a lock, and he has been a team captain since 2017.

Other Patriots players to become team captains

Who will take the remaining positions? Linebacker Dont’a Hightower is a three-time captain, and he has been a captain since becoming a Patriot in 2012. He may receive the same honor in 2020. Running back James White was a team captain in 2019 for the first time in his career, and he may get a second stint.

Wide receiver Julian Edelman may get the honor as well. He has never been a team captain. The same applies to Patrick Chung, Jarrett Stidham, and other key players. When it comes to Stidham, McCourty has nothing but words of praise for him.

“I think (Stidham is) a young guy who’s eager to learn,” he said. “That quarterback position is always a hard position. I think between him and Brian Hoyer, two guys I’ve gotten to be around – (Brian) Hoyer longer, but even Stidham last year – how much they put into just getting better.”
