The New England Patriots lost quarterback Tom Brady in free agency. The star quarterback left the team after 20 years, and many thought that the Patriots would struggle in 2020. We can’t really say that this will be the case in September. Not now that we know that Bill Belichick’s Patriots signed Cam Newton.
Newton joined the quarterback squad and he will compete for the starting position in September.
ESPN’s Adams Schefter and Chris Mortenson reported that the Patriots and Newton have agreed to a one-year “incentive-laden” contract. Newton, Brian Hoyer, and Jarrett Stidham will compete for Brady’s position in New England.
The Patriots will use the skills Cam Newton offers
The Carolina Panthers released Newton. In his nine years as a Carolina Panthers quarterback, Newton had a 68-55-1 record, 29,041 yards and 182 touchdowns. The talented quarterback won many awards. He won the 2015 NFL MVP award and was also the NFL Offensive Player of the Year in 2015. Newton made three Pro Bowl appearances in 2011, 2013 and 2015. He was also named the First-Team All-Pro in 2015.
Carolina placed the veteran quarterback on injured reserve Nov. 5 2019. He sustained a foot injury and had to heal his fracture. The team allowed him to seek a trade March 17 but then released him March 24.
How does Newton fit in the Patriots roster? Head coach Bill Belichick sure has a plan for his new quarterback. He was satisfied with Stidham’s skills and talent, and Hoyer is also here to offer his experience. The Patriots didn’t really show interest in getting Newton, but things changed in a few weeks. It looks like the team is ready to give him a chance, and who knows, maybe he will become a key player for Belichick’s offense.
The only thing we can do at the moment is wait and see what happens with Newton. For now, he has a deal with the Pats, and he is ready to show off his skills. He was a NFL MVP, remember? So, yes, Belichick signed a talented player. Hopefully, this talent will help the Patriots win more games in the upcoming season.
