Rex Burkhead Reworks Contract With New England Patriots

Rex Burkhead will have his contract with the New England Patriots reworked. Burkhead’s cap number will go above $3.9 million in the final season of his time with the team. The scheduling changed today.

ESPN’s Field Yates reported that the running back has agreed to rework his deal. This will generate about $1 million in cap space for the team.

Burkhead will see a reported $550,000 upon signing his deal. His base salary of $2.5 million will drop to $1.05 million. Burkhead’s cumulative per-game bonuses will go from $500,000 to $400,000.

This is an additional layer of roster security for Burkhead on the depth chart of investments. Sony Michel and Damien Harris affect the whole situation. James White and Brandon Bolden will soon enter their contract years. Undrafted rookie JJ Taylor garnered $100,000 between the signing bonus and base salary this spring.

Rex Burkhead has a big role with the Patriots

New England had just $264,000 in cam room after hitting the cost-effecitve pact with newly-acquired quarterback Cam Newton at the end of June. New England now has $1.244 million at the beginning of July as confirmed by PatsCap’s Miguel Benzan.

Burkhead played in 31 games across his three seasons with the team. He had a total of 752 rushing yards on 186 carries, 664 receiving yards on 71 catches and 12 touchdowns.

“Rex has been a good player for us,” Patriots head coach Bill Belichick said of Burkhead last fall. “Everybody improves and can work on little things every year, but I’d say overall he’s been a pretty solid player for us. He plays on all four downs. Rex can run the ball. He can handle all of our regular-down plays. He’s a good third-down back. … Rex can play in all the big four in the kicking game – kickoff, kickoff return, punt and punt return. He’s one of the most versatile players on our team.”

New England is entering a challenging season and they will need Burkhead’s talent to move on. Tom Brady is no longer part of the roster, and Belichick needs all the talent he can get to win games.

Belichick is confident about the upcoming season, and he likes the players he has on the roster. Let’s see what happens in September.
