Bill Belichick Talks on Patriots Plans For Quarterback as Camp Nears

The New England Patriots have a new quarterback in Cam Newton. Everyone around the organization is very interested to see how he will turn out. Taking over for Tom Brady, arguably the best quarterback in NFL history is no small task.

Eyes will be watching to see if he has what it takes to take the Patriots to the Superbowl once again. Head coach Bill Belichick recently talked about his plans for the quarterback position as the season draws nearer.

Belichick noted that they have not yet started evaluating given that the players are not yet even on the field. The first practice will come later in August.

“That spot’s the same as all the others on the team,” Belichick said during a conference call with media. “We’ve got a long way to go. I can’t control how players perform. That’s up to them. We’ll give everybody an opportunity and we’ll see what happens.”

When asked about why they went with Cam Newton, Belichick had a pretty simple response.

“We felt like this was the best option for our team, so that’s why we did it,” Belichick said.

He also went on to say “Things worked out. We spent quite a bit of time with Cam, and he spent quite a bit of time with us. I think it was a mutual interest. We spent quite a bit of – a number of different people and a number of different conversations, just trying to see how the fit would be. It was very positive on our end. I’m glad it worked out.”

None of this means that Newton will be the starter, however.

“I think that’s about the same as all the other spots on the team,” Belichick said. “We got a long way to go and we’ll see how things turn out. I can’t control how players perform – that’s up to them. We’ll give everybody an opportunity and see what happens. So, we don’t know.”

Things are looking good for the Patriots ahead of the NFL season. What are the chances that they can get back to the Superbowl?
