Dante Scarnecchia Gives Interesting Explanation On Cam Newton’s ‘Huge Edge’ In Patriots QB Battle

The New England Patriots will have to make a decision on their starting quarterback, and many believe that players will take part in the toughest qb battle. Patriots legend Dante Scarnecchia made a prediction about the situation. Cam Newton, Jarrett Stidham and Brian Hoyer will have to try really hard to get the job in September.

The retired offensive line coach discussed the quarterback situation during his appearance on SiriusXM Mad Dog Sports Radio. According to him, experience is what gives Newton an advantage over Stidham.

“I think he has a huge edge, because of what he’s done in the league,” Scarnecchia said. “The guy was an MVP (in 2015). We played against him a number of times, have a huge respect for him as a player and leader, and the things he’s done. This guy, from a skill set, a lot different from guys we’ve had in there at quarterback over the years. (Jarrett) Stidham has great feet and ability to move and avoid the rush, and create and do a lot of similar things.

“I don’t think he’s to Cam’s skill set, but this guy is a pretty good player. He also has a tremendous work ethic and he’s a smart guy. I know this, you have to be a smart guy to play quarterback in that system. Having said all that, the cupboard is not half empty by any means. I think there is a lot of enthusiasm. The situation looks a lot different than it did two months ago.”

The Patriots may give Newton a chance to win the qb battle

Newton has been part of the NFL for a decade. He has better experience than Stidham. However, Stidham spent his rookie year in New England and learned so much from Tom Brady. TB12 taught Stidham so many great things, and the second-year quarterback will use that in the upcoming season.

Head coach Bill Belichick likes Stidham. Patriots players like Stidham. He is a good fit, and the Patriots planned to move on with him. Newton came without an announcement, and the team offered him a deal without a formal workout and medical evaluation.

The 2015 NFL MVP will have to stay healthy to get an even better deal. Patriots will soon enter training camp, and a lot of things will be a lot clearer by then.
