Patriots Coach Bill Belichick Supports One Major College Football, NFL Rule Change

There’s a big difference between college football and the NFL. New England Patriots head coach Bill Belichick made a statement on the new NFL rule change.

The two sides are different in so many ways. College wideouts need to have one food prepared for a catch. NFL wideouts have to have both legs established for a catch. This is a rather big difference. Things are a lot different in terms of clock stoppages. Players have a brief pause after first downs in NCAA play.

The Patriots head coacb believes there should be a smaller gap between the two levels.

Belichick is a defensive coach by nature. He wants to push defensive pass interference go over the same across levels. The penalty is a 15-yarder in college. When it comes to the NFL, it’s more serious spot foul. Downfield contact can be really serious. Things look pretty harsh in this aspect.

“I think probably the one thing that is worth looking at is just the college pass interference rules,” Belichick said during his appearance on The Rich Eisen Show. “I know why it’s what it is, and I also know why it’s different in college, and you could argue both sides of it. But it’s a big penalty, and sometimes those are just tough calls. So I think that’s worth looking at.”

Patriots coach Belichick is right about the NFL rule change

Coach Belichick doesn’t really care if the NFL drops to college enforcement or the other way around. According to him, the most important thing is to put everyone on the same page. Players need to adjust to the new pace with ease. Having a huge gap is not helpful at all.

“I would say just in general, I would be in favor of the NCAA and the NFL trying to consolidate the rulebook to where we can have as many rules be the same as possible so that the fans, as well as the players who come from college, can make a clean transition into the same set of rules instead of different ones.

“So targeting’s targeting, holding’s holding, interference is interference, and so forth. As much as we could do that, I would be in favor of that just for the overall quality of the game. But I think the pass interference rule is not necessarily one I would change, but I would take a look at it, and I think it would be good if it was the same as the college rule — either they change it to ours or we change it to theirs, just from the standpoint of consistency.”

Patriots coach Belichick may be right about this. Players may need to see bigger changes. Going from college football to NFL professionalism is hard for some players.
