Patriots quarterback Cam Newton had a really good first impression on head coach Bill Belichick. The Patriots head coach likes his new quarterback, and this may give Newton a greater chance to get the starting job.

Cam’s a hardworking kid. He really is,” the Patriots head coach said Friday morning.

Belichick will have to make a decision. Newton challenged 2019 fourth-round pick Jarrett Stidham for the starting job. Add veteran journeyman Brian Hoyer and undrafted free agent to the mix. The quarterback will take part in a tough batt.e

The Patriots head coach likes his quarterbacks.

“He’s worked very hard, I’d say, as all of our players have,” Belichick said. “I’d say that certainly for all the quarterbacks, at that position, those guys have been locked in, focused and confident in what they’re able to do and the information they have to give to the team — playcalling, adjustments, audibles, protection adjustments, things like that. That’s all going pretty well.”

The Patriots will have their first full-pads practice on Monday. Patriots players like Newton and everything he brings to the field.

“He’s a big guy, that’s for sure — just his physical presence,” veteran running back Rex Burkhead said. “He’s always been a great player, just [with] his versatility — his ability to run the ball and pass as well. Cam’s been able to do that at a high level for many years. He’s come in right away, head down, and tried to pick it up as quick as possible. … His first impact has been great. He’s just trying to learn as much as he can and mesh and jell with the rest of the guys.”

Wide receiver Damiere Byrd knows Newton. They played together in Carolina from 2016 to 2018. What does Byrd think of the 2015 NFL MVP?

“I just think he’s moving forward,” he said. “He’s trying to learn the offense, just like everybody else is, trying to learn the routines and what’s going [on] in this climate now.”
