Report: Patriots To Fill Final Roster Spot With Familiar Center

David Andrews provides great security, but the New England Patriots would love to add a familiar name to their roster. According to some reports, the team will probably sign center Tyler Gauthier to fill the final open roster spot. ESPN’s Mike Reiss reported the possibility. Gauthier visited New England on Monday. He will have to pass his physical and coronavirus test before inking his deal with the Patriots.

New England knows Gauthier really well. The team signed him as an undrafted rookie out of Miami last spring. The team cut him after the final roster trimming. Gauthier found his spot on the Patriots practice squad last October. Jacksonville Jaguars signed him away in December. The 23-year-old didn’t see any action with the Jaguars and they waived him the past weekend.

The Patriots are reinforcing their roster

Andrews is the starting center for the Patriots. He will return to New England after missing the 2019 season due to blood clots. Andrews was one of two experienced snappers on the Patriots’ roster. Seventh-rounder Dustin Woodard is the other option for the team. Hjalte Froholdt has played under center in college. However, he played guard since signing his contract with the Patriots as a fourth-rounder.

New England reached an agreement Monday with running back Lamar Miller. His agent confirmed the information. Tight end Jordan Leggett and defensive tackle Darius Kilgo will get their spots on the Patriots roster too.

Coach Bill Belichick entered Monday with four open spots on the 80-man roster. Eight players opted out of the 2020 season due to coronavirus concerns. This left the Patriots with a lot of empty positions. The team filled the first four spots with the signings of undrafted rookies Will Hastings, Brian Lewerke and Isaiah Zuber. New England agreed to a trade deal with the Detroit Lions and got cornerback Michael Jackson. Yes, his signing triggered an avalanche of reactions on Twitter.

These signings only confirm that Bill Belichick is ready to do whatever it takes to reinforce the roster and get the players he needs for the upcoming season. He is ready to win despite all the rumors of him tanking the 2020 NFL season.
