Cam Newton Rects to Being Named as Patriots Captain

The New England Patriots put an end to the quarterback competition. Cam Newton got the starting position and he became a Patriots captain.

Patriots head coach Bill Belichick named Newton as the Patriots starting quarterback in a meeting Thursday morning. Jim McBride from The Boston Globe’s journal was the first to confirm the news.

Running back James White, center David Andrews, linebacker Ja’Whaun Bentley, defensive tackle Lawrence Guy, cornerback Jason McCourty, safety Devin McCourty and wide receiver Matthew Slater are team captains too.

Newton, Bentley, Guy and Jason McCourty are first-time captains.

The former Carolina Panthers quarterback is really excited to get the top position in New England. Newton took to his Instagram account to share his excitement. He was more than excited to enter a new era with such a wonderful organization. Moreover, he is more than ready to win a Super Bowl with the Patriots.

“Dear New England, I will not and do not take this opportunity for granted!! I’m so grateful for this organization, my teammates and this city,” Newton wrote on Instagram. “Thank you!! No need to look back now… LFG!!”

Newton and the Pats will have their season opener on Sept. 13. The Miami Dolphins are coming to Foxboro for one of the most challenging games of the regular season. New England has a rather tough schedule, but the team is ready for it.

Coach Belichick has cut and signed a few players. Veteran wideout Mohamed Sanu has to go. The Patriots released three players, including the former Atlanta Falcons wideout. His release came like a surprise, mostly because the Patriots gave up on a second-round selection to sign him. Well, Belichick’s winning formula always works and he probably had a good reason to cut Sanu.

Newton is entitled to replace TB12 and he needs a strong receiving unit to win more games in 2020. Sanu is gone now and Belichick has to adjust the position.
