Darrelle Revis Shares Great Bill Belichick Story From Patriots Contract Talks

In 2014, the New England Patriots signed a valuable player in free agency. It was a big move and the Patriots decided to open their pocketbooks to get him. Well, it’s not like the superstar received a blank check. Darrelle Revis appeared on Bleacher Report’s Master Tesfatsion on “Unfold Stories” and talked about head coach Bill Belichick.

Revis talked about the negotiations between his representatives and coach Belichick. If by any chance you didn’t know, Belichick is the team’s de facto general manager.

“When it came to negotiation time, Bill was real stern about a number,” Revis said. “My side, we were stuck at ($)16 (million for a one-year deal). And his whole deal was, ‘Tom makes 14.’ And that was really it.”

Belichick’s message to Revis was that if he came in New England, he wouldn’t earn more than veteran quarterback Tom Brady who had a $14.8 million cap hit that season.

Revis got the message. He had a $4 million pay cut from his 2013 salary with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to get $12 million in his only season with the Patriots.

Darrelle Revis had great experience with Bill Belichick

The legendary cornerback helped the team win a Super Bowl that season. It was worth it. Playing with head coach Bill Belichick was really great. Revis had spent years with Rex Ryan and the New York Jets.

Revis rejoined the Jets in 2015, and his time with the Patriots wasn’t really for him. In 2014, both Revis and the Patriots got what they wanted.

It’s eggshells. You’re walking on eggshells when you come here,” Revis told Tesfatsion about playing in New England. “Bill might come out of the blue and ask you some question. … They just want you to know everything about the preparation or the game day.”

Well, it’s an expected move from Belichick. He has a specific way of doing things, and the team has benefited a lot from his decisions. Belichick knows how to do the right move at the right time. He did lose Tom Brady though.
