Ex-NFL Gm Makes Prediction On Cam Newton Contract Extension With Patriots

Cam Newton has yet to make an impact on the Patriots game and people are already talking about his contract. The veteran quarterback signed a one-year deal with the team, and head coach Bill Belichick named him a starting quarterback for the team. Newton has had an incredible performance in training camp and it looks like coaches and players like his potential. Former NFL executive Mike Tannenbaum has made some comments on the 2015 NFL MVP and his deal with the Pats.

It’s funny how people have started thinking of the possibility to see Newton wear the Pats uniform for a while.

Tannenbaum was once the New York Jets’ general manager. He was also the Miami Dolphins’ executive vice president of football operations. Tannenbaum appeared on ESPN’s Get Up and spoke about Newton’s future with the Patriots. According to him, this season will focus on Newton’s time with the Patriots and the possible contract extension.

“Mark my words,” Tannenbaum said, “in two to three weeks, the early storyline that we’ll be talking about is ‘When is Cam Newton getting that extension? Cam Newton, Comeback Player of the Year? Can they keep up with Baltimore and Kansas City in the AFC?’

“If, and it is a big if, Cam Newton stays healthy, I love this match, and more importantly moving forward, I think he could be the Patriots quarterback for the next three, four, five years.”

Tannenbaum makes bold prediction about Cam Newton and his next contract

The Patriots like what they see on the field. Belichick respects Newton’s production. He may be viewing second-year quarterback Jarrett Stidham as the quarterback of the future, but Newton will probably stay around for a while.

Newton called his fit with the Patriots a “match made in heaven.” Maybe the Patriots will keep him around in the next few years.

“I think this offense will be really hard to defend because it’s going to be diverse — RPOs, direct quarterback runs, Julian Edelman, running backs that can catch the ball,” Tannenbaum added.

Newton will play his first game as a Patriots quarterback Sunday. The Miami Dolphins will have their season opener at Gillette Stadium.
