New England Patriots’ Most Surprising Cuts Include Draft Picks, Both Kickers

The New England Patriots are all-in when it comes to rewriting the winning formula, and now they are releasing both of their kickers.

In the most surprising wave of cuts, the Patriots released veteran kicker Nick Folk and waived rookie kicker Justin Rohrwasser. In other words, the Patriots don’t have a kicker at the moment. Of course, these two can return to Foxboro in the near future.

Folk won’t need to clear waivers to return. The Patriots probably released him to make room for someone who will end up on injured reserve. Players put on injured reserve earlier than Monday won’t be allowed to play in 2020. Players put on IR Monday can return in 3 weeks.

Defensive tackle Beau Allen will probably end up on IR. He missed training camp due to an undisclosed injury.

The New England Patriots need kickers

Rohrwasser may join the Patriots practice squad if he clears waivers Sunday at noo. New England selected Rohrwasser in the fifth round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Many thought that he would be the team’s future at kicker. Well, it turns out Rohrwasser was nothing but a poor selection after all. The team decided to expose him to waivers and this shows the Patriots’ true opinion of the rookie. Three other rookie kickers made NFL teams this summer. Was Rohrwasser a mistake?

The Patriots have been pretty strict with their players in the past few days. The team cut Mohamed Sanu in another shocking move. Head coach Bill Belichick is determined to make a change and he is eliminating all the players who don’t fit his winning formula.

Losing Rohrwasser is a game-changing move and it’s hard to swallow the fact that the Patriots don’t have a kicker at the moment. Reinforcing their kicker unit was a priority and now there are no kickers on the Patriots roster. Let’s see what happens in the next few days.

New England enters 2020 with a game against the Miami Dolphins. The Buffalo Bills are their biggest threat for the season.
