Patriots Officially Release 3 Players on Thursday Night

Cam Newton is QB1 for the New England Patriots. The competition is over, and Newton won. He is starting games for the team and many would agree that this was the right move to be done. New England is off to a challenging season, and Newton is leading the way. Thursday was a big day for the former Carolina Panthers quarterback. Well, this day marked the end of an era for some players. The Patriots decided to release three players ahead of their season opener against the Miami Dolphins.

It’s an official decision and the Patriots announced the release of wide receiver Mohamed Sanu Sr., rookie defensive lineman Michael Barnett and cornerback Michael Jackson.

Patriots release valuable players

The Patriots released Sanu just ten months after trading for him. New England reached for Sanu through a mid-season trade and lost a valuable selection to the Atlanta Falcons. Head coach Bill Belichick gave up on a second-round pick to get the veteran wideout.

The Patriots got Jackson through a trade, too. In July, the Detroit Lions planned to waive Jackson and the Patriots offered a conditional seventh-round draft pick. Well, Belichick doesn’t have to worry about the pick anymore.

New England signed Barnett as an undrafted free agent in late-August. He had a good game in his four years with the Georgia Bulldogs, stacking 47 tackles and 0.5 tackles for loss in 27 games.

Cutting Sanu is definitely a surprising move. Many thought that the Patriots will keep him on the roster forever. He is a talented and experienced wideout and the team needs more depth at the position.

Newton is getting ready to replace Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Tom Brady. Belichick needs to give him a good receiver. The Patriots need every talented receiver at the moment. Releasing Sanu may not be a good move, but the Patriots made a decision. We all know that Belichick makes the best decisions in the league. He is the best NFL coach, remember? The Patriots have been linked with many players. One of them may easily step in as a replacement for Sanu.
