Patriots Sign Division III Receiver To Fill Final Practice Squad Spot

The New England Patriots added a new receiver to their 16-man practice squad. The team showed interest in Mason Kinsey.

Kinsey is an undrafted rookie wide receiver out of Division III Berry College. He signed a practice squad deal with the team on Sunday. Berry’s athletic department confirmed the signing.

The receiver spent training camp with the Tennessee Titans. The team released him during the final roster trimming. Kinsey cleared waivers Sunday.

Kinsey had incredible numbers at the D-III level. He had 203 catches for 3,343 yards and 50 touchdowns in his four years at Berry. His 50 scores included 17 as a sophomore in 2017 and 16 in both 2018 and 2019 seasons. Kinsey returned punts and kicks in college.

At his pre-draft pro day, the receiver had a 4.65-second 40-yard dash, 7.30-second three-cone drill, 4.34-second short shuttle, 10-foot, 5-inch broad jump and 37.5-inch vertical. He measures at 5-foot-10, 198 pounds.

The Patriots could use another receiver

Kinsey is the only player on the Patriots initial practice squad who practiced with a different NFL organization this summer. The small-school product is one of the three wide receivers in the 16-man group. He joins UDFA Isaiah Zuber and third-year pro Devin Ross.

The Patriots didn’t added wideout Jeff Thomas to the 53-man roster. He didn’t earn a spot on the team’s initial practice squad despite the fact that he was one of the Patriots highly touted undrafted rookies.

Kinsey didn’t show up for Sunday’s practice. He will have to undergo coronavirus testing before joining the Pats.

New England has made a few big moves and they have cut and signed many players. The team had to shrink the roster and eliminate 24 players.

The release of Mohamed Sanu came like a big surprise because the Patriots risked too much to get him. Nick Folk and Justin Rohrwasser are out, too. This means that the Patriots don’t have any kickers on the roster. The Patriots roster will see a lot of changes in the next few weeks.
