Report: Josh McDaniels Has Been ‘Super Impressed’ With This Cam Newton Trait

New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels got to work with veteran quarterback Cam Newton, using his running game to try out a new gameplan. Newton has been part of the NFL for a decade, and the Pats were the only team to offer him a deal.

If you ask McDaniels, he will offer words of praise for his self-awareness and open-mindedness.

Josh McDaniels praised Cam Newton

McDaniels talked about the 2015 NFL MVP right after the big win over the Las Vegas Raiders. He likes Newton’s willingness to take coaching as the quarterback continues to learn the books.

“I have been super impressed with his humility,” McDaniels said. “This guy has accomplished a lot in his career. Being 10 years in the league and doing all the things he has done, coming here and having no familiarity with our coaching style, our system, or the way we do things, I have been incredibly impressed with the way he’s embraced it, looks forward to it, really wants to be coached, wants to be great, wants to improve and is a great example for a lot of our younger players.

I feel very comfortable coaching him, whether it is practice, meetings, games, walkthroughs because he is such a great listener and he takes nothing personal, which, really, there’s no part of coaching that is personal. It’s just about trying to correct and improve. He’s really done a nice job.”

McDaniels changed his scheme to boost Newton’s skillsett. He tried new option plays and provided specific quarterback runs. NFL superstar Tom Brady couldn’t really do that. The Patriots offensive coordinator said there’s “certainly a huge chunk of what we’ve been able to try and do in the past that we continue to try and do.”

Newton to boost his game

In the game against Las Vegas, Pats players ran just four read-option plays. The offensive efforts came on traditional handoffs. Newton had just 27 of the 250 rushing yards. Stats show that 21 of these came on a fourth-quarter scramble. This was Newton’s “shakiest” passing performance so far, and the team still won the game.

In Weeks 1 and 3, the Patriots rushed for 200-plus yards. In Week 2, they threw for more than 400.

McDaniels works really hard with Newton, and the result is more than obvious. The Kansas City Chiefs are next on their list.
