Report: Josh McDaniels Would’ve Left Patriots Under These Circumstances

The New England Patriots had an amazing offseason. A lot of players lost the team in free agency. Some players decided to opt-out of the regular season due to coronavirus concerns. It was a challenging development for the team, but one member of the Patriots organization decided to stay. Offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels almost left the Patriots, but he is still here.

There were so many rumors related to his potential departure. Many thought that McDaniels would become a head coach in the NFL.  McDaniels stayed in New England and he is determined to help the team win.

Josh McDaniels has so much left to do with the Patriots

Albert Breer from Sports Illustrated talked about the arrival of Cam Newton in New England. Was this the reason McDaniels had to stay? Breer reported that McDaniels would have left the team over the winter under the best circumstances.

“…Had the Browns offered McDaniels the job,and allowed McDaniels to bring a GM with him (it likely would’ve been Patriots scouting exec Dave Ziegler) and set football ops up as he saw fit, he’d be gone already,” Breer wrote. “And I also know he was intrigued by the Carolina job, which was filled by Matt Rhule just as he was set to interview (the Panthers had to move quickly, for obvious reasons).

“So that tells you that, yes, he’s prepared to take a job elsewhere, but also that the way the place is set up—from ownership to who the GM is to how football ops would be set up—is a big factor for him, after what happened in Denver.”

McDaniels won’t really make any decision on his future in the next few months. The offensive coordinator has some other concerns on his mind. He is more than excited to work with the 2015 NFL MVP. Newton is a runner and he was actually excellent in the team’s Week 1 win over the Miami Dolphins. Newton did so many great things on the field, and McDaniels has a chance to try all the things he couldn’t do with veteran quarterback Tom Brady.
