Report: New England Patriots Have Expressed Interest In Leonard Fournette

The Jacksonville Jaguars waived their leading rusher Leonard Fournette. It looks like the New England Patriots are interested in getting the talented player.

The Jaguars removed the No.4 overall selection from the 2017 NFL Draft two weeks before the start of the regular season. According to some reports, they tried to trade Fournette, but NFL teams were interested in getting him. Right after Jacksonville waived Fournette, he cleared waivers and became a free agent for the first time in his NFL career. In the past few days, a few teams showed interest in signing Fournette.

Jeff Howe confirmed the Patriots’ interest. “The Patriots have expressed interest in Leonard Fournette, per source. We’ll see if it leads to anything,” Howe’s report read.

The former LSU star had great success with the Jaguars offense in 2019. He led the Jags in rushing with 1,152 yards and also led the team in interceptions with 76 on the regular season.

Patriots may not need Leonard Fournette

The Patriots aren’t in short supply when it comes to having running backs on the roster. They have Sony Michel, Damien Harris, Rex Burkhead and James White before signing Lamar Miller in free agency. Adding Fournette to this group would lead to the elimination of at least one of these backs.

Head coach Bill Belichick is determined to make a change and he has already made a few moves. Will he move on with Fournette? The Patriots can easily use another talented player in the upcoming season.

The Patriots will enter a challenging season and Belichick will probably sign or cut a few more players. He will have to make a decision on the starting quarterback first. Cam Newton will probably replace Tom Brady as QB1. He will have to compete with Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham before making the top spot.

New England lost a lot of valuable players and eight superstars decided to sit out the 2020 season due to coronavirus concerns. But, coach Belichick is confident about his current team and he will do a few more moves before entering Week 1.
