Superstar Guard Reveals Lakers ‘Heavily Pursued’ Him Last Offseason

The Los Angeles Lakers were going after a lot of players last offseason. A talented guard could almost become a Lakers player. LA had LeBron James and they needed to go after another talented player. The team signed Anthony Davis through a trade deal, but they wanted more.

The Lakers front office was trying to get Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving and many other players. These players would form a superteam. Kemba Walker was a target, but he signed with the Boston Celtics. Sopan Deb of the New York Times reported that the Lakers were definitely into signing Walker.

“But leaving Charlotte was a shock for Walker. He expected to stay, he said. Walker was eligible for a so-called supermax extension, but the Hornets came in with an offer that was less than that, conscious of paying the luxury tax. He began to consider other teams. At first, Walker said, he was heavily pursued by the Los Angeles Lakers, the Dallas Mavericks and the team he grew up closest to, the Knicks. He considered going home.”

The talented guard is a good fit for the Lakers

If the Lakers were able to sign Walker, they would be unstoppable. Walker is not the ultimate 3-point shooter in the NBA, but he is really talented. The veteran is a prolific scorer and the Lakers needed something like that behind Davis and LeBron.

Walker isn’t someone who’d cause locker room or chemistry issues. He will stay in Boston for quite some time so he won’t be able to sign with the Lakers. The same applies to Kawhi Leonard, Kyrie Irving, and Kevin Durant. LeBron is the best player in the league but he sure needs some help around. LA doesn’t have too many tradeable assets, and they may not go after a big name.

Someone like Chris Paul may be the only option for the Lakers. He wouldn’t ask a lot in a trade. He could have at least one or two more All-Star level years in him. This would turn the Lakers into contenders.
