The Patriots’ New Defensive Star is Also the NFL’s Best Bargain

There is a new New England Patriots defensive star that has been making a name for himself recently. When it comes to shopping at a low price, nobody does is better at it than Bill Belichick. For his entire career, he has turned castoffs, undrafted free agents, and late-round draft picks into stars. But still, finding an elite edge rusher does force a steep financial commitment. But he struck gold again. Their current star is not making much money at all. In fact, just based on his play alone, Chase Winovich looks like the NFL’s best bargain.

The New England Patriots have been very good so far this year. The offense is very much improved over last year with Cam Newton at the helm. This should not be too surprising to see, however. Bill Belichick has been high on Newton from the star.

“I think when you’re talking about mobile quarterbacks — guys that are tough to handle, can throw, run, make good decisions … — I would put him at the top of the list.  “Not saying there aren’t a lot of other good players that do that, but I would say of all the guys we played recently in the last couple of years, I think he’s the hardest guy to (defend).”

“He makes good decisions, can run. He’s strong. He’s hard to tackle. He can do a lot of different things. He can beat you in a lot of different ways. We saw that in the game in 2013. I would put him at the top of the list. I’m not saying the other guys aren’t a problem, because they are. But he’s maybe public enemy No. 1.”

Still though, the defense might be the most impressive thing about the Patriots so far this season.

Chase Winovich actually outproduced Rashan Gary at Michigan, who is a former five-star recruit and ended up as the 12th overall pick of the 2019 NFL draft. However, even with his great play, he had to wait until the 3rd round in order to be picked.

The Patriots were able to pick up the edge defender as the 77th overall pick. Even though the Patriots have a very veteran-heavy defense with Dont’a Hightower, Kyle Van Noy, and Jamie Collins, Winovich has had plenty of playing time as a rookie.

What do you think about his play so far this season? Do you think the defense is looking good going into week 4?
